To celebrate the arrival of the tall ships and the 150th anniversary of the Whitehaven News a special concert was played by the Liverpool Philharmonic on the quayside in front of an audience of thousands.

People filled the area around the hub and packed the piers and many scaled Mount Steps to get a better view.

With the Queen's jubilee and England's attempt at the World cup the programme of music taken from Last Night of the Proms was perfect. Especially so, because of the setting and the nautical themes of Wood's "Fantasy of British sea songs" and Rule Britannia.

The evening ended with a terrific firework display accompanied by the orchestra playing the final two tunes.
