Miterdale is almost like an enchanted secret valley. The
lower end fuses with Eskdale but the upper part lies in a separate valley between Eskdale
and Wasdale. There is no road in its upper reaches but it was once a valuable packhorse
route from Keswick. In those days there was an Inn called the Nanny Horns and a
cluster of small farms at the head of the valley. It is still used by walkers for access
to Scafell, who take a route past the dark foreboding Burnmoor tarn where a solitary house
stands on a moor that is truly bleak in winter. However, a little further down the valley
in summer it is a wonderful place, green and fertile with its waterfalls and river.
Habitation in the area goes back to the bronze age as evidenced by the stone circles on
the moor at Brat's Hill between Eskdale and Miterdale.
