Enter the archway off Lowther Street and
find yourself in a different world with Whitehaven's new £3 million indoor visitor
attraction. The Rum Story starts off in a tropical rain
forest as it explains the complete story of the Caribbean produced spirit. Whitehaven
merchant's, the Jefferson's, imported this drink in the 18th & 19th centuries and it
is their original bonded warehouse that houses this unique attraction.
Rum manufacture, plantations, slavery, British navy rum
rations, barrel making, piracy, smuggling and prohibition are all vividly portrayed within
a surprisingly large building. |
| Allow plenty of time as it takes about 2
hours to follow the entire story. Before entering the
attraction there is a large glass covered courtyard which has been turned into cafe.
This also houses a gift shop and the amazing kinetic clock which
animates the story of rum and is available for everyone to see free of charge.
Another free attraction is Jefferson's old office which has been
left virtually unchanged for centuries as the business became the oldest established
family wine traders in the country. |
