Ennerdale is one of the
quietest Lakes in terms of the number of tourists and this is probably due to the fact
that there is no proper road running along its length. Most of its visitors are locals at
the weekend. Even in mid-summer it is possible to walk all day on the southern fells
seeing barely a soul. The lake itself supplies water to Whitehaven and is fed by the river
Liza. |

The far end of the
valley is planted with conifers worked by the Forestry Commission whose access road along
the North side of the lake makes for easy walking or a quick route by mountain bike. There
are indications of early Norse habitation, however the area was until the 17th century a
Deer Park covered in thousands of oak trees and remnants of this deciduous forest can be
found on the south side. There are also iron ore workings and a site of a bloomery or
early blast furnace near Smithy Beck. |
