The Beacon Heritage Centre

beacon1.jpg (49045 bytes)
The Beacon Heritage Centre overlooks the harbour on the West Strand. It contains a large exhibition area featuring a broad range of temporary exhibitions at the side of the building, whilst the main 'lighthouse' is split into four themed floors. The top floor contains a weather gallery and also allows for excellent views of the harbour. The next two story storeys are "Whitehaven looking out" and "Whitehaven looking in" and contain a pick of exhibits from the old Whitehaven museum plus more modern and interactive displays portraying the history of Whitehaven and the links with America. This includes mining, ship building, slavery, rum and tobacco trades plus George Washington and John Paul Jones. The raised entry level contains a well stocked gift shop and entrance to the free exhibition area. There are also reference facilities with a large part of the old museum collection stored off site but available to keen researchers.
