The name 'Whitehaven' can be traced back to Old Norse and possibly comes from the fact that the headland rocks were light in colour. An important port after the 17th century, it has probably given its name to the several other Whitehavens around the world.

Despite the fact that there has been harbour here since the 12th Century, it remained an insignificant village until the Lowther family developed it as a mining town that shipped coal to Dublin, thereby creating one of the largest ports in England by the late 18th century. Ship building followed along with the tobacco, rum and slavery trade with the Caribbean and Virginia.

Although its fortunes faltered during the last century, Whitehaven is now taking on a new life - promoting its fine Georgian architecture and historic links with America, including Washington's grandmother and the raid by John Paul Jones. This history along with The Beacon, a newly developed marina, and the 'Renaissance of Whitehaven' project have created a superb potential tourist location.

Western Lakeland has traces of a fascinating history dating back to Neolithic and Bronze age times through to Roman, Celtic, Norse and Anglian settlers with later, rural industry and trade.

There are several valleys each with their own character radiating out to the coastal plain with its nature reserves. Literary references include Wordsworth and Coleridge and many villages have their own tale to tell.

Although tourists throng to attractions such as the "La’al Ratty" steam railway, there are still plenty of walks around the lakes and over the fells that allow for peaceful contemplation of the natural splendour of this region.
